    Plato's Gorgias

    As part of its Philosophy Seminar, the Research Centre for Greek Philosophy of the Academy of Athens is co-organizing with the British School of Athens three seminars on Plato's Gorgias,

    These will be led by Professor Malcolm Schofield (Director of Research, Faculty of Classics, and Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge)

    1st seminar:
    Wednesday, 26 January, at 5 pm
    (British School of Athens, Finlay)
    Those intending to participate are asked to bring copies of the text (in translation if preferred), and to prepare by reading through the dialogue as far as 466A. The focus of discussion will be on Gorgias's conception of rhetoric and Socrates' response at 462-5. We shall also look for comparison at passages from Gorgias's own Encomium of Helen
    (Greek text in Diels-Kranz, Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker Vol. 2).

    2nd seminar:
    Wednesday, 16 February, at 5 pm
    ("E. Lambride's Library")
    The focus on the discussion will be on the conversation with Polus.

    3rd seminar:
    Wednesday, 23 February, at 5 pm
    (British School of Athens, Upper House)
    The focus on the discussion will be on the conversation with Callicles.
